The Essential Tattoo Aftercare Guide for Irish Weather
How to properly heal fine-line, dotwork, and large geometric mandalas in Dublin’s damp and changing climate for crisp, lasting contrast.

Getting a fine dotwork mandala or an intricate geometric sleeve is an investment in permanent art. However, how your skin heals in the first 14 days dictates 80% of how crisp the ink will look five years down the line.
Healing in Ireland presents a unique challenge: cool, damp weather outdoors paired with central indoor heating, which rapidly dehydrates the outer epidermal layers.
Phase 1: The First 48 Hours
At Studio Gatti, we typically apply a sterile medical dermal shield (second skin). Keep this initial protective barrier on for 24 to 48 hours unless fluid accumulation breaks the perimeter seal. It protects fresh skin from city dust and friction.
When removing the film, always do so under lukewarm running water, pulling gently downward along the grain of the skin rather than peeling away abruptly.
Phase 2: Gentle Cleansing & Controlled Hydration
Wash the area twice daily with an unscented, neutral pH antibacterial foam soap. Pat dry using a clean disposable paper towel — never rub with bath towels, which harbor residual laundry detergents and lint.
Apply only a paper-thin layer of specialized tattoo ointment or panthenol-based balm. The most common mistake is over-moisturizing: skin needs oxygen to form healthy epithelial tissue. If your tattoo looks shiny or wet, you have used too much.
